Monitoring of microlitter (including microplastics) in the seafloor sediments of the OSPAR maritime area

[ProgrammeDescription]Description of the monitoring programme

Microlitter, including microplastics, on the seabed is monitored according to the OSPAR CEMP guidelines. This involves collecting seafloor sediment samples to extract, isolate, characterise, and quantify microplastics and other microlitter.
This information is used to describe the quality status of the OSPAR area and assess good environmental status achievement. It is also used to evaluate the effects and effectiveness of measures taken at national and OSPAR level to reduce marine litter pollution at a wide scale, notably the OSPAR ML-RAP.

This OSPAR guideline is of relevance to MSFD D10 Criteria 2 on the composition, amount and spatial distribution of microlitter in seabed sediment that are at levels that do not cause harm to the coastal and marine environment.

[OtherPoliciesConventions]Monitoring for other Union legislation or international agreements that contributes to the programme.
