[Table title] | Name of monitoring programme | Mean maximum length of demersal fish and elasmobranchs (FC3) |
[ProgrammeDescription] | Description of the monitoring programme | The most important data source for mean maximum length are those fisheries surveys (groundfish and beam trawl) that are conducted as part of ICES. The International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) programme in the North Sea, the Celtic Seas, Bay of Biscay and Iberia is particularly important since the trawl is a general-purpose design aimed to catch both demersal and pelagic species. Standard data collected on these surveys consists of numbers of each species of fish sampled in each trawl sample, measured to defined length categories (i.e. 1cm below, so a fish with a recorded length of 14 cm would be between 14.00 cm and 14.99 cm in length). By dividing these species catch numbers-at-length by the area swept by the trawl on each sampling occasion, these catch data are converted to standardised estimates of fish density-at-length (referred to below as Catch Per Unit Area, CPUA), by species, at each sampling location. |

All data, before entering the database, have to pass an extensive quality check. Additional data scrutiny (DATRAS data downloaded on 30-03-2017) is made by OSPAR experts prior to finalisation of a dataproduct for use in indicator assessments (Moriarty and Greenstreet, 2017). The final processed dataproduct is publically available. |
