[Table title] | Name of monitoring programme | Ambient noise |
[ProgrammeDescription] | Description of the monitoring programme | The programme enables the spatial and temporal distribution of ambient noise (and trends in this activity) to be quantified. Elements of operational monitoring have been developed and used in JOMOPANS and JONAS. Ship Noise and Wind Noise that generate low-frequency continuous sound are evaluated. Sources of this information are for example AIS (for shipping intensities), VMS (for fishery activities) and the OSPAR impulsive noise register (for other sources of sound). Through acoustical propagation modelling, sound scape maps will be calculated for the required parameters, Sound Pressure Level (SPL) percentiles (5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th). A sound scape map of natural sound should be made separately, this would enable to produce maps of the excess level. Each year a basic measurement of ambient noise will be performed, and every 6 years an extended measurement effort will be made, these measurements are necessary to validate the calculations and models. Measurements are also used to fully describe and understand the ambient noise in the sea. |
