BB16 - Changes in average trophic level of marine predators (FW4)

FieldDescriptionValidated Entry
[Table title]Name of monitoring programmeChanges in average trophic level of marine predators (FW4)
[ProgrammeDescription]Description of the monitoring programmeFor the calculation of the indicator FW4, the Mean trophic level (MTL), two types of data are needed: (1) biomass data per species for fish and invertebrates from surveys and landings, and (2) data on the trophic level of each species. Surveys: Annual biomass data per species comes from the International Bottom Trawl Surveys (IBTS), DEMERSALES and EVHOE, carried out by Spain (1992–2015) and France (1997–2015) respectively. The DEMERSALES and EVHOE surveys are standardized bottom trawl surveys, which are part of the Data Collection Framework of the Common Fisheries Policy (EC regulation No. 665/2008). Landings: Annual biomass per species, from the official landings dataset were used for the analyses in subdivisions VIIIa and VIIIb for the northern Bay of Biscay, and subdivisions VIIIc of the southern Bay of Biscay. These data can be downloaded from the ICES website (ICES Historical catch statistics 1950–2010 and Official catch statistics 2006–2014). Trophic level data: Some preliminary work was made for the IA2017, where France and Spain collated regional TL values per species. The regional TL values estimated from stomach content analyses were based on the IEO’s database corresponding to DEMERSALES surveys in the Spanish part of the Bay of Biscay, for the period 1990–2013. The remaining TL values, estimated from stomach content analysis, stable isotope analysis or models, were collected from the published literature for regions and surrounding regions. TL database needs to be updated to improve data reliability as well as the uncertainty around them.
