[Table title] | Name of monitoring programme | Direct and indirect eutrophication effects including chlorophyll, water transparency , abundance of macrophytes, benthic species shift, phytoplankton species shift and oxygen |
[ProgrammeDescription] | Description of the monitoring programme | Monitoring of direct and indirect eutrophication effects is carried out within OSPAR's Coordinated Environmental Monitoring Programme (CEMP) (Agreement 2016-01); component E-2. Eutrophication effects cover: Phytoplankton chlorophyll; Phytoplankton species composition; Macrophytes; Oxygen; Benthic communities. Monitoring of effects in problem and potential problem areas is mandatory as a requirement of the Eutrophication Monitoring Programme (OSPAR Agreement 2005-04). Monitoring of effects in non-problem areas is discretionary. The OSPAR Eutrophication Monitoring Programme provides the basis for enabling Contracting Parties to assess and classify the eutrophication status of their maritime waters under the Common Procedure for the Identification of the Eutrophication Status of the OSPAR Maritime Area.
National monitoring programmes are designed to align with monitoring requirements for the EU WFD and the MSFD. |
